Historically Izmir is a trading port and currently the 2nd largest port in Turkey after Istanbul.
One major difference in Izmir though is the organization of businesses and everyday life, in broad terms the city is organized into residential areas and Industrial areas. Making the city attractive place to live and work in.
As one would expect from a large industrial city, just about everything is available here and in many cases manufactured locally
Most factories have been recently constructed and are centered in theIzmir Ataturk Organize Sanayi Bolgesi (Izmir Ataturk Industrial Zone) which is located to the north of the city in the district of Çiğli. There is also the very modern (established in 1990) Aegean Free Zone (ESBAS) which is located to the south of the City, close to the Airport. There are of course still lots of factories outside of these regions but the algorithm is pretty much the same they are modern, well equipped and outside of the City center.
Major Exports from Izmir are Textiles, Tobacco, Cotton, leather goods, Dried Fruits, Olive Oil, but there are also very healthy Electrical Appliance, Paper and Chemical industries in the region.
